What is Happening at KinderSmile Foundation? |

| Meet Nyeilla Veale: KinderSmile Foundation's new Perinatal Health and Wellness Program Director |
Nye joined us as an enthusiastic volunteer during the coronavirus pandemic while completing her Masters in Biomedical Sciences and classes at Rutgers School of Dental Medicine. She was then hired as KSF's Administrative Assistant and Dental Assistant. |
|
|
We are excited to see her continue to shine as KinderSmile Foundation's Perinatal Health and Wellness Program Director. Nye will provide oversight to the entire program, at all locations. She will implement protocols, continue to forge partnerships, attend outreach events, schedule and staff education sessions, gather and analyze all required data points for future publications, and more. |
The state of New Jersey is falling short, having the fourth-highest maternal mortality rate in the US. In NJ a Black woman is seven times more likely to die from maternal complications. Oral health is the gateway to total health, and access to oral health care in pregnancy is safe, and a key component of improving maternal outcomes.
KinderSmile Perinatal Health and Wellness Program (PHWP) breaks the dangerous cycle of untreated dental diseases. We empower uninsured mothers, from pregnancy and up to 3 years postpartum, with informative, personal, culturally-sensitive training on the importance of maternal oral health and its impact on the developing fetus and young children. Graduates of the training program earn a full year of free dental care to restore their smiles.
PHWP has served 335 mothers to date and has been translated into Spanish and Arabic. Black and Hispanic groups are uninsured at higher rates. KinderSmile Foundation strives to reduce racial disparities & inequities in oral health care access by linking mothers and their young children to a barrier-free permanent Dental Home by age one or the eruption of their first tooth, as recommended by the AAPD. Thank you, Nye, for your dedication to the community and for all that you do! |

2022 Mission Trip to Israel |
This June KinderSmile Foundation celebrated its 16th international mission trip, with a meaningful public health awareness campaign to Israel with Dr. Nicole McGrath-Barnes and Dr. Michal Herman!
Kindersmile Foundation had a successful and impactful trip. We had the opportunity to learn about public health dentistry in a state where socialized medicine is implemented. Our partners included Project Sunshine, a volunteer organization that collaborates with several medical facilities. Project Sunshine volunteer sites included kindergartens for children with cerebral palsy and kindergartens for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
We also collaborated with a warm and welcoming Bedouin village community, Rachma, where we had the opportunity to provide oral health and nutritional education to several pre-K and Kindergarten classes. We visited a Kibbutz Oral Health Clinic, leading to a long discussion about the global misconception that the mouth is a separate entity from the body. We partnered with Dental Volunteers for Israel (DVI) in Jerusalem, where our visit included a detailed introduction to their program, and contained information about community dentistry in Israel.
KSF distributed 500 donated oral health kits in addition to 75 oral health kits with three-sided toothbrushes for children with developmental disabilities. Other volunteer participants included Dede Horowicz, Juan Barnes, Renee and Perry Singletary, Eilat Herman, Liyam Herman, Katie O'Leary, and Kyle Johnson. We are grateful to Dr. Ethan Glickman for introducing us to Betty Whalen, who graciously sponsored our two CSLP volunteers Katie and Kyle. Thank you! |

| Save the Dates for Our Dual Premieres of Toothache! Join KinderSmile Foundation in exposing the need to bridge the gap in access to oral health care and forging innovative solutions for a healthier future of smiles!
After the screenings we will host panel discussions with local community leaders featured in the film.
Registration will open in a few weeks. We can't wait to see you there! |
